Chapter Seven

Cave system outside Kandahar

He was sitting behind his desk when the knock came on the door.

"Enter."

Tarzi mentally cautioned himself to be careful. The Arab who came through the door was a man he knew well, Sultan Hakim, an important man. He was also a good friend and associate of Mullah Omar. His family was Saudi Arabian, wealthy with oil money. Money he passed on to the Taliban cause in generous amounts, to pay for arms and equipment, money to pay the all-important bounty to the families of Shaheeds. Suicide bombers.

Tarzi indicated a comfortable couch. "Please, take a seat, Sultan Hakim. How may I help you?"

When he was comfortable, Hakim stared directly at him, and Tarzi squirmed under the hard gaze, wondering what was up. He needed this man, needed his money. Without it, life would be difficult for their cause, and less comfortable for him.

"Tell me about Latif."

He tried to hide his shock.

How did Hakim discover we have a problem?

"Commander Omar Latif is away at present, Sultan."

"He has deserted to the enemy." The voice was flat and cold. Sultan Hakim was pissed.

Tarzi put on a friendly smile and waved his hand in the air, as if to bat the comment away. "We don't know that, not for sure. He is, shall we say, out of communication."

Inwardly, he was cursing whoever had given away their operational details to this important man.

The reply startled him. Hakim wasn’t normally so blunt. "Don't bullshit me, Mullah. He killed your son, and now he's heading east toward Kabul to offer his services to the enemy. You know what this would mean, the secrets he has in his possession. MY secrets! What are you doing to resolve the problem?"

The Mullah's smile slipped a little. "Assuming you're correct…"

"I am correct. There is no need to discuss it. What are you doing?"

He sighed. "Very well. I have dispatched my best men to intercept him. They’ll bring him and his men back here, and I will uncover the truth."

"How many men do you have searching for him?"

"Three separate warbands. Sayed Nashir leads the best of them. He will succeed, never fear, he is very clever and knows the area better than his home village."

"Send more."

"Excuse me?"

"I said send more. More men." Hakim's voice rose to a fury, "There is nothing more important than stopping this man. I assume you want my support when they decide who is to replace Mullah Omar.”

Tarzi looked up sharply. “His death is confirmed?”

He nodded. “The announcement will come soon. They’re working on the wording even as we speak.”

The Mullah smiled. At last, it was within his grasp. “I am always willing to submit to the will of Allah, Sultan Hakim.”

“Good. How many fighters do you have available right now?"

He thought for a few moments, working out the numbers. He'd taken heavy losses lately, and many of his men were busy guarding and transporting the precious opium crop. "I have a hundred men within a five kilometer radius of this place. Of course, I can't spare them all, in case of an attack.
